January 30th, 1995 LINUX upgraded:
Lycos10 and Lycos11 have been upgraded to LINUX 1.1.83, which seems much more stable.

Accordingly, Lycos1 has been removed as a retriever and is now dedicated to serving the home page and icons. That should speed up initial accesses sginificantly. I'll be moving the doucmentation from FUZINE to LYCOS shortly.

Two TATUNG Sparc clones have also arrived, and should begin exploring the web soon.

January 22nd, 1995 New catalog:
The newest catalog contains 1,566,205 unique URLs found between Nov. 21 and January 21st (including 260,618 documents actually retrieved). Note that 5,996 documents titled Document Moved were removed from last week's catalog.

260,618 documents fetched totaling 1,741,523,380 bytes
	1,305,587 unexplored URLs with descriptions
	517,627,933 bytes of Lycos summaries
	288,031,466 bytes of inverted index
The catalog collection rate was much higher over the Christmas holidays because I was able to use borrowed hardware while people were on vacation. I expect the growth rate to pick back up this week as I bring more new Lycos hardware on-line.

January 21st, 1995 Reindexing:
I am removing documents titled Document Moved from the latest catalog. At this time, Lycos does not index redirects; if you register a document, please give the actual location.

January 21st, 1995 Pentium server:
I am having great difficulty in keeping the new Pentium server working; it sems that LINUX (although amazingly fast) cannot handle the huge numbers of HTTP connections reliably. If you have any suggestions, please email them to fuzzy@cmu.edu. Note that we've already increased the numbers of processes, numbers of TCP connections per socket, and added 100 meg of swap space.

January 18th, 1995 New server:
It's here! The Pentiums are connected, and one is now a server (running Linux). Try the Lycos11 Server (search page and search form). The other Pentium will be a web explorer. We also have two Sparc clones (Tatung) on order. What a nest we're building here...

January 15th, 1995 New catalog:
The newest catalog contains 1,536,015 unique URLs found between Nov. 21 and January 13th (including 258,640 documents actually retrieved). I have also tightened the definition of the web used by the Lycos catalog: no URLs containing an equals sign (=) or a question mark (?) are included. This is intended to reduce the number of URLs included from inside "virtual spaces".

258,640 documents fetched totaling 1,645,827,295 bytes
	1,277,375 unexplored URLs with descriptions
	508217713 bytes of Lycos summaries
	281,411,339 bytes of inverted index

January 9th, 1995 New catalog:
The newest catalog contains 1,494,261 unique URLs found between Nov. 21 and January 8th (including 248,291 documents actually retrieved). I have also tightened the definition of the web used by the Lycos catalog: no URLs containing an equals sign (=) or a question mark (?) are included. This is intended to reduce the number of URLs included from inside "virtual spaces".

248,291 documents fetched totaling 1,586,628,771 bytes
	1,245,970 unexplored URLs with descriptions
	495,770,173 bytes of Lycos summaries
	274,663,718 bytes of inverted index
